Senior Citizens Advisory Committee & Center Growth The Senior Citizens Advisory Committee - comprised of an alderman, members of the community, members of the Senior Citizens Club, business leaders and county officials - was put in place prior to the opening of the Senior Citizens Center in May 2000.
The first step for the committee was to find a location for the Center. An old recreational facility was chosen and totally renovated to serve the needs of the Seniors. Parks department employees - working with City employees, Rutherford County workhouse inmates and local businesses - stripped the building. New plumbing, wiring, walls, heating and air conditioning and more were installed in the building. An office, kitchen area, 2 restrooms, day/TV room and sewing room were constructed. In 2009, the Center began a second renovation to expand the space available.
New Programming
The renovation of the building was key to the kicking off of the new program. Those involved with the City wanted the seniors to know that they were appreciated and were important to the City.
A schedule fills the week with events for the seniors who seem to enjoy their new building. The seniors hear talks on health-related issues and medical benefits; they bowl each Tuesday; they enjoy music provided by local talent; they receive chair massages from a LMT; they are taking ceramics classes, they receive monthly blood pressure checks and take monthly trips to the theater.
FiftyForward
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved a Request for Proposal in 2024 to allow the Center's operations to be run by the Nashville-local organization, FiftyForward. The property and building remains in the City's control, while operations were shifted to FiftyForward. Membership is free to anyone wanting to join. Members of the center are also be able to partake in any programs or special events hosted at FiftyForward centers across the Nashville-area.
